The Importance of Vision

January 18, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

The Importance of VisionSome time ago, some blog friends introduced me to Pinterest. At first, I saw Pinterest as another tool to distract me, but recently I began to see possibilities.

When I dug into Tell Your Time by Amy Lynn Andrews at the beginning of the year, I began to think about being a dreamer. Andrews encourages people to think out their roles. And to all the ones that immediately spring to mind, she encourages the addition of one more: dreamer.

And I began to think: what are my dreams? Many have come true:

  • be a mommy
  • homeschool my kids
  • write a novel

That’s a pretty satisfying list right there. But I haven’t stopped dreaming.

The “experts” will tell you that a big part of making dreams come true is vision. You’ll never reach a goal if your sights aren’t set on it. I used to have a bulletin board where I’d post pictures of the things I dreamed about: a vision board. Some keep clippings in a folder or scrapbook. But since we’ve become a little nomadic, I haven’t had a place to put these things.

Enter Pinterest.

On a sudden burst of inspiration, I put together my own vision board.

Pinterest is also a great place to collect homeschool information. See my friend Sam’s great post on that subject.

To obtain a Pinterest account, you must first be invited. If you want an account, and don’t have one yet, I’ll gladly invite you. Simply click the contact button on the menu up there and send me a message asking for your invitation.

And keep those eyes on the prize.

The Simplicity of the Season

December 19, 2011 by Carey Jane Clark

manger and babyToday, while considering what to post as the gift I’m thankful for, this phrase dropped into my heart: the simplicity of the season.

Though often it seems it isn’t sophisticated enough for us–not high-tech enough, not frilly or dressed in a bow, the beauty of the message of Christmas truly is its simplicity: a baby, a manger, the lavishing of love.

As complicated as our lives seem to get, and as complicated as they probably were for the people involved in that first Christmas, when all the trappings we’re tempted to festoon it with are stripped away, we’re left with a very simple message: seeking a relationship with His creation that had been complicated by evil, God made a way and sent a gift meant for everyone to clear the way and make way for relationship once more.

My hope for you is that despite the busyness of the season, you can find moments to rest in that simplicity. And today, that’s what I’m thankful for.

The Practice of Preparing and Advent

December 12, 2011 by Carey Jane Clark

Advent

This year, it seems like everything has been different for advent. We weren’t even home at the beginning of the official start to advent, we’ve been playing catch-up with our Truth in the Tinsel ornaments, and it’s been unusually busy–all for very good reasons–but all events that came up last-minute to change our December. We didn’t even get a real tree this year–breaking a holiday tradition we’ve held since Pumpkin was tiny.

In the midst of the chaos, how do we prepare our hearts for the season? We dispensed with our traditional ornaments this year. They are all packed in a box at my parents’ home. We borrowed a small artificial tree from them, and have been putting up only the ornaments we’ve made with Truth in the Tinsel.

It’s been a nice process of simplifying. We’ll head up to my inlaws’ place this week to spend a longer time with them than we usually do over the holidays, since we know our time in Canada is short now. We’ll take our homeschool with us because three children at loose ends at Grandma and Grandpa’s house are only a novelty for so long (and then they’re obnoxious).

But we’ll get to go out in the bush behind their house and help them pick out their tree–one of the ones they planted themselves–and enjoy family and new traditions, and a pause to remember what the season is really all about.

The True Meaning of Home

December 5, 2011 by Carey Jane Clark

Home

It’s been a somewhat nomadic year. Which is okay, because we all know it’s just a season–one that is almost complete. We had a wonderful visit with my sister and an unforgettable trip to the Creation Museum, but it is ever so good to be home. Even if “home” is a somewhat relative term right now.

Recently, someone approached JavaMan and me at church with an encouragement from Psalm 90:1, the Message translation:
“God, it seems you’ve been our home forever” What a beautiful message! Wherever we are, we are truly home.

Today, I am thankful for the gift of home.
