Stick with it Saturday

January 21, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

Sam's NogginThis week, I allowed life to take over a bit. But I did manage to exercise three days. Admittedly, they weren’t the best workouts in the world. Twice, after missing my own exercise, I tried to squeeze it in later in the day–once with the kids as part of their homeschool time. (If I give a good effort, though, I still manage to work up a sweat):

Monday – One mile walk with kids
Tuesday – Tore the cellophane off that Turbo Jam video and did the Learn and Burn.
Thursday – Interval training on the mini-trampoline. These are definitely the most productive workouts. I should have done another one this morning, but I was just plain lazy. Not much more can be said about that.

I’m going to make a sincere effort to get back on track this week, but I’ve kicked the moving and packing into high gear so we can be moved out by the end of the week and clean the house top to bottom on Saturday, so I’m prepared that I may not always be in bed when I should and therefore not always up in time to exercise. I’m going to do my best.

The Importance of Vision

January 18, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

The Importance of VisionSome time ago, some blog friends introduced me to Pinterest. At first, I saw Pinterest as another tool to distract me, but recently I began to see possibilities.

When I dug into Tell Your Time by Amy Lynn Andrews at the beginning of the year, I began to think about being a dreamer. Andrews encourages people to think out their roles. And to all the ones that immediately spring to mind, she encourages the addition of one more: dreamer.

And I began to think: what are my dreams? Many have come true:

  • be a mommy
  • homeschool my kids
  • write a novel

That’s a pretty satisfying list right there. But I haven’t stopped dreaming.

The “experts” will tell you that a big part of making dreams come true is vision. You’ll never reach a goal if your sights aren’t set on it. I used to have a bulletin board where I’d post pictures of the things I dreamed about: a vision board. Some keep clippings in a folder or scrapbook. But since we’ve become a little nomadic, I haven’t had a place to put these things.

Enter Pinterest.

On a sudden burst of inspiration, I put together my own vision board.

Pinterest is also a great place to collect homeschool information. See my friend Sam’s great post on that subject.

To obtain a Pinterest account, you must first be invited. If you want an account, and don’t have one yet, I’ll gladly invite you. Simply click the contact button on the menu up there and send me a message asking for your invitation.

And keep those eyes on the prize.

January 3 in 30: Still Refining

January 15, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

This week wasn’t a total success because although I went to bed on time, I spent a lot of time awake in the middle of the night. I’ve narrowed the problem down to nutrition (the mineral formula I take was unavailable) or creativity. I’m in a discovery phase with my new writing project and very excited about it. I’ve been incredibly creative and productive in the middle of the night, but at the expense of productive early mornings, which meant that even though I was in bed on time, this discipline didn’t have the desired effect of resulting in time for exercise in the mornings.

Here’s how I did with this month’s goals:

  1. Go to bed at 10:00 p.m. – I did pretty well with this all week long–my problems were in the middle of the night. I’ve taken steps to resolve this.
  2. Spend at least an hour a day purging and sorting in preparation for our move. For most of the week, I did quite well with this, but flagged at the end of the week. I made up for it in the middle of the night one of my sleepless nights and went on a real blitz. Things are starting to take shape, and looking definitely possible.
  3. Keep homeschool time sacred – My decision mid-week to simplify the homeschool even further on Tuesdays and Thursdays helped a lot with keeping this a realistic goal, but I still have room for improvement here.

How are you doing with your January goals? Did you make resolutions that will be hard to keep, or did you break your ideals down into realistic, achievable goals? Need some help? Check out the resources at 3 in 30.

Stick with it Saturday: Failure

January 14, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

Sam's NogginI have to report this week that I didn’t stick with it. I did a two-mile walk on Monday, but for the rest of the week I had sleep challenges. I went to bed on time, for the most part, but woke up in the middle of the night, and wasn’t able to get back to sleep. The days went accordingly after that.

I’m quite sure the problem is that I wasn’t able to purchase the mineral formula I normally take because it wasn’t available. I know from experience that my nutrition affects my sleep profoundly.

I’m not giving up, and I’m determined to stay accountable.

My minerals finally came in at the store, and I’ll be picking them up today. I also got my Turbo Jam video in the mail this week (I ordered it off kijiji.ca, thinking it was used, and it came in a wrapper. I paid $20 for it!)

I’m hoping I’ll have renewed enthusiasm for the week ahead.
