October 3 in 30, Week 2

October 10, 2011 by Carey Jane Clark

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! Here’s my progress on my goals for this month:3 in 30 button

  1. Bible in 90 Days – I did not finish the Bible in 90 Days on time. However, I am not kicking myself about it. I gained a tremendous amount from my experience reading at this pace, and if it weren’t for some exceptional circumstances, I would have finished on time. I will do it again (and finish on time) and I will continue my reading. All things considered, I’m really not that far off the goal. I am just about to start 1 Corinthians, which puts me only eight days behind. Again, considering the unscheduled events of the last 90 days, I’m okay with that.
  2. Getting our homeschool schedule restarted – We are getting there, but I am also doing better at not getting bent out of shape if something temporarily gets waylaid.
  3. Spending more one-on-one time with my kids. This goal was inspired by reading some of the goals of others in the 3 in 30 challenge, but also because we seem to be in a phase right now where my kids need this more. We’ve experienced a lot of change this year and some grief, and my kids are showing some signs of wear that need that one-on-one attention. Just a few minutes of conversations one-on-one with Pumpkin this month have made a world of difference for him.

Assisting me in my goal-setting efforts is my lack of internet time. It’s been a great exercise to pare down in this area. I’ve also made some goals for the next few weeks while I concentrate on work I need to do, that I dial back on blogging as well. I’m kind of proud of myself for being okay with that.

October 3 in 30

September 30, 2011 by Carey Jane Clark

3 in 30 buttonI made progress on my goals this month, but as far as completion, I have been found lacking. Thus my resolution to take smaller bites.

I was doing great on my goal to get homeschool off to a good start, and then Sweetpea got a cough she wasn’t able to shake. For two solid weeks we were up nightly (as was she, of course) with her coughing spells. After a disturbed sleep, she slept in until around 9:00 most mornings, making a prompt start to our day impossible. Not only that, but she coughed through most of our lessons, and the day dragged on. I finally settled for a very abbreviated schedule–salvaging history and math, and throwing most of the rest out the window.

Fortunately, she is doing better, so we’re hoping our schedule will return to normal now.

So what are my October goals?

  1. Re-establish our schedule.
  2. Finish the Bible in 90 Days. The absolute last day to finish on time (because two “grace” days are built in on the end of the schedule) is next Sunday. I am on day 73. I want to finish, and I know that motivation will wane if I don’t do it on time, so I’m giving it a push until the end of the week. JavaMan will be away this week, so if I dedicate my evenings, perhaps I can actually get it done.
  3. Spend more one-on-one time with my kids. I had some wonderful conversations with my son in the last two weeks in moments when we had time to be alone. I want more of that.

Taking Smaller Bites

September 29, 2011 by Carey Jane Clark

3 in 30 buttonIf you’ve been tracking my 3 in 30 posts, you will notice that I’ve been slipping farther and farther behind on my monthly goals. For September, the goals I was working on were:

  1. Bible in 90 Days
  2. Revision of my novel (and drafting a proposal–snuck that one in there without telling you about it)
  3. Getting homeschool off to a good start.

You see what I’m doing, right? You probably saw it before I did. Three huge goals. No baby steps. No one day at a time stuff here. Just giant leaps of accomplishment.

Read: I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E.

Used to be, I would just skimp on sleep. But I’ve learned I really can’t function adequately as a mother, a wife–a person–on that kind of lifestyle.

I spent a bit of time this month looking over other people’s 3 in 30 goals. They’ve written things like “drink eight glasses of water a day.” You know, achievable, one-day-at-a-time type goals. Things I should be doing, but I’m not. Things I kick myself about every day.

I don’t really know how to do things on a smaller scale. Ask anyone who really knows me. But I need to learn. So wait until you see my goals for October. I hope I’ll impress you with their do-ableness. I’ve decided to take smaller bites.

September 3 in 30, Week 4

September 24, 2011 by Carey Jane Clark

3 in 30 buttonFeeling a little overwhelmed this week. I began work on my proposal to send to agents, and feeling the strain a little. More on that a little later this week.

Here’s  how I’m doing on my goals:

  1. Bible in 90 Days – On day 65, should be on day 77. Yes, the gap is widening.
  2. Revision – Getting there, but looked over some of the previous chapters and realized they still need a bit more work. Will it ever end?
  3. Starting Homeschool – The cracks started to show a bit this week–fortunately, we filled them in with field trips! On Monday, it’s back to a normal schedule, no matter what!
