Picking Oneself Up

January 16, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

Last week did not represent a stellar success in terms of meeting my goals. I’m thankful we can always start again. Over the weekend, busy as it was, somehow the family pulled together and the house returned to a state of calm after boxes and papers and piles everywhere all week long. We had a visit with some dear friends and met their new baby, and another friend visited on Sunday.

A few days ago the much-anticipated snow arrived outside our house. Yesterday afternoon Sprout headed outside to make snow angels.

Joining with Multitudes on Mondays, I’m going to count 1000 gifts in 2012. Today is the first day:

  1. celebrations
  2. new life
  3. old friends
  4. snow falling
  5. snow angels
  6. packing boxes
  7. a friend’s generosity
  8. checks on my to-do list
  9. bright new ideas
  10. finding balance
  11. recovery from injury
  12. hot apple cider
  13. finding lost items (during the packing purge)
  14. grateful children
  15. partnerships
  16. peace in the midst of chaos
  17. second chances
  18. failure as a stepping stone
  19. strength to start another day
  20. the mercy of homeschool on Mondays (p.j.s are suitable attire)

And as a final tribute to picking up after failure, I give you this inspirational video, one of my favorites:

January 3 in 30: Still Refining

January 15, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

This week wasn’t a total success because although I went to bed on time, I spent a lot of time awake in the middle of the night. I’ve narrowed the problem down to nutrition (the mineral formula I take was unavailable) or creativity. I’m in a discovery phase with my new writing project and very excited about it. I’ve been incredibly creative and productive in the middle of the night, but at the expense of productive early mornings, which meant that even though I was in bed on time, this discipline didn’t have the desired effect of resulting in time for exercise in the mornings.

Here’s how I did with this month’s goals:

  1. Go to bed at 10:00 p.m. – I did pretty well with this all week long–my problems were in the middle of the night. I’ve taken steps to resolve this.
  2. Spend at least an hour a day purging and sorting in preparation for our move. For most of the week, I did quite well with this, but flagged at the end of the week. I made up for it in the middle of the night one of my sleepless nights and went on a real blitz. Things are starting to take shape, and looking definitely possible.
  3. Keep homeschool time sacred – My decision mid-week to simplify the homeschool even further on Tuesdays and Thursdays helped a lot with keeping this a realistic goal, but I still have room for improvement here.

How are you doing with your January goals? Did you make resolutions that will be hard to keep, or did you break your ideals down into realistic, achievable goals? Need some help? Check out the resources at 3 in 30.

Stick with it Saturday: Failure

January 14, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

Sam's NogginI have to report this week that I didn’t stick with it. I did a two-mile walk on Monday, but for the rest of the week I had sleep challenges. I went to bed on time, for the most part, but woke up in the middle of the night, and wasn’t able to get back to sleep. The days went accordingly after that.

I’m quite sure the problem is that I wasn’t able to purchase the mineral formula I normally take because it wasn’t available. I know from experience that my nutrition affects my sleep profoundly.

I’m not giving up, and I’m determined to stay accountable.

My minerals finally came in at the store, and I’ll be picking them up today. I also got my Turbo Jam video in the mail this week (I ordered it off kijiji.ca, thinking it was used, and it came in a wrapper. I paid $20 for it!)

I’m hoping I’ll have renewed enthusiasm for the week ahead.

Saving Grace by Annie Jones: A Review

January 13, 2012 by Carey Jane Clark

Friday Fiction FixFrom the description of Saving Grace, I thought I would love it. It’s billed as the story of Grace Grayson-Wiley, a reclusive old woman. She is the subject of small-town gossip because of her annual vigils on the night of the Splendor Belle Gala on her front porch, dressed in the dress she wore the night her love and hope for marriage stood her up.

The blurb on the book also mentions the story is about four women, introduced in a previous novel who decide to help Grace in an effort to strengthen their bond of their own friendship. “Will their joint project instead tear them apart forever?”

The book itself didn’t seem to live up to this description. First, the story focused much more on the lives of the women in the friendship than it did on the story of Grace Grayson-Wiley, and while her story was interesting–even a mystery of sorts that isn’t unravelled until the end–the story of the women never threatens the dissolution of their friendship, so it didn’t feel that the stakes were as high as suggested.

That’s not to say that the lives of the women don’t spark interest in the story–Naomi is the new bride of a man with a teenage daughter who doesn’t seem impressed with her, Gayle is fighting suspicions that something is wrong with her husband, Rosemary is keeping a beau at bay while dealing with the return of her grown daughter, and Lucy fears she will never find true love, thinking herself unworthy of the right kind of man. Although the story is told from the viewpoint of Naomi, its in Lucy’s voice that the author seems most at home.

But I found it difficult, despite their descriptions to pin down the age of the characters, who seemed to waver between thinking of themselves as senior citizens to acting like giddy teenagers. While I cared about whether Lucy finally gave in to love and what might be wrong with Gayle’s husband, I just wasn’t invested enough in the characters to drive me to keep reading. It wasn’t one of those books that called me from my nightstand when I had to put it down.

At times it felt as if the story were interrupted by fashion news. One paragraph reads: “Lucy tugged her black cardigan on over her white turtle-neck. Her full pink skirt, which shrouded her hips while accenting the inward nip of her waist, swished over her white stockings as her black flaps slapped out a rushed pace as she went to meet Ben.”

I wished I could peel these details away and get to the story, because the story itself had potential and the dynamic between the characters and the mystery of Grace Grayson-Wiley were worth reading about.

To be fair, this was the second in a series of books, the first of which I have not read, and it’s possible that reading the first book would ground me deeper in the character’s identities.

Note: I received this book as an ebook from Multnomah Waterbrook Publishers in exchange for my honest review.
