We found a place to buy Painted Lady butterfly larvae. We had several, shared some with another family, and three died. We still have six larvae and yesterday the first one emerged from its crysalis.
It has been so much fun for us all to learn together about them. We borrowed a number of books from the library, and I made up an observation sheet so the kids could keep track of the butterflies’ progress through their metamorphosis.
There are also a number of online resources for studying them. Enchanted Learning has a great handout with the anatomy of the Painted Lady butterfly.
We received really helpful information with the butterflies when they arrived, but to give an idea what’s involved, here’s a great video explaining how to care for Painted Lady butterflies.
Pumpkin took a few moments today to sketch a picture of the newest member of the family.
